Winter Sport at Hoërskool John Vorster

Rugby is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the winter season at Hoërskool John Vorster. As one of South Africa's most beloved sports, rugby has a deep-rooted tradition at our school — one that brings together courage, character, camaraderie, and pride on the same field.

Each year, from the early weeks of the first term through the cold evenings of the third term, our learners pull on the green-and-orange jersey and give everything on the field. It is more than just a game — it is a school culture passed down from one generation to the next.

About the Game

Rugby union is a team sport that demands physical courage, strategic thinking, and unshakeable teamwork. Every position — from prop to wing — has a unique role that contributes to the team's performance as a whole. This dynamic teaches learners invaluable life skills such as leadership, accountability, and perseverance — qualities that align directly with our school motto: Volhard en Oorwin.

The rugby season gives learners from Grade 8 through Grade 12 the opportunity to compete at various levels — from U/14 through to the First Team — against schools in the local area and across the region. The programme focuses not only on winning, but on developing well-rounded, resilient young people.

Our Rugby Programme

Hoërskool John Vorster's rugby programme is managed by dedicated coaches and sports staff who are committed to the development of learners both on and off the field. We believe that quality coaching opens further doors, and we strive to guide every player to reach their full potential.
