Our Cherished Traditions
Traditions are the heart of Hoërskool John Vorster. They are the events and customs that connect generations of learners and create a sense of pride and belonging. Below is an overview of some of our beloved school customs.
School Customs and Events
Welcome Day
At the start of each academic year, the school welcomes new Grade 8 learners with a special orientation programme. Senior learners and teachers help newcomers find their way around campus and get to know the school culture.
Sports Day
The annual Sports Day is one of the highlights of the school year. Learners compete in various athletics disciplines, supported by enthusiastic parents, teachers, and fellow learners. House colours are worn with pride and the spirit is infectious.
School Festival
The School Festival is an annual celebration of the school's culture, creativity, and community. Learners showcase their talents in music, drama, art, and more. The festival brings the entire school family — learners, teachers, parents, and alumni — together.
Matric Farewell and Send-off
The send-off of the matric learners is an emotional and festive occasion. The Matric Farewell — or "last night" — is a cherished tradition where the Grade 12 class celebrates their school years before beginning their final exams.
Prize-Giving Ceremony
The annual Prize-Giving Ceremony is a formal occasion at which outstanding learners are recognised for their academic, sporting, and cultural achievements. It is a proud moment for learners and their families.
House Gatherings
Every learner is a member of a house. House gatherings and competitions throughout the year build camaraderie, leadership, and a sense of belonging to a smaller community within the larger school.
School Function / Matric Farewell
The Matric Farewell Function is the formal send-off event for Grade 12 learners at the end of the school year. Learners celebrate their final year together in an elegant setting, accompanied by their parents and loved ones.
